Leslie Drewitz, writing in The In-Depth Genealogist, offers some guidance on when to do a timeline, and how to make it effective.

When you hit that inevitable brick wall, or your research effort just seems to become to complicated, using a timeline may help you find a way to proceed.

Leslie gives a good example in her article of using a timeline to demonstrate her point. You can find her article at: When to do a Timeline (...and how to Make it Effective) | The In-Depth Genealogist
